CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The data center was a bustling hive of activity when Cami and Connor arrived there just before eight a.m. She felt hopeful that this would provide a breakthrough in the case and finally allow them to catch the predator who was stalking these women.

"How can I help you?" The young, blond receptionist in the lobby looked harassed and was typing furiously on her keyboard, frowning from behind her blue-rimmed eyeglasses. Cami got the impression she was there more to fend off the public while doing her own work than she was to welcome them in. After all, the data center was like a big back office where administrative work was done. Not a front office place where sales were made.

"FBI," Connor said, showing his badge. That got her attention. Her fingers froze. She looked up, taking them both in for the first time.

"FBI?" she echoed. "Why are you here?"

"We are investigating two suspicious deaths," Connor said. "The data center used by both the victims' phones is this one. We need to take a look at your systems and to see if anyone here was able to access these phones' locations."

"I'm going to call my manager," the receptionist said immediately, getting on the phone.

They didn't have to wait long. Just a minute later, a harassed-looking man with a phone in his hand and a clipboard under his arm appeared through a side door.

"Richard, these are FBI officers," the receptionist said. "And they want to know something about our systems."

His brown eyes widened. "Our systems. What do you want to know?"

Cami waited while Connor patiently repeated his request.

"You think someone in our data center is doing this?" The man sounded horrified by the thought. "I'm sure that's impossible."

"We need to check it out," Connor insisted.

With an effort, the flustered manager pulled himself together.

"Come to my office, please," he said, leading them away from the receptionist's curious stare.

Cami followed him and Connor along the corridor, into an elevator, and up to the building's third floor. His office was spacious, with a view of the city center nearby. There were several computer monitors on the wall. A stream of data was being filtered down on the screens.

"We're doing updates," he explained. "So this is a difficult time."

Connor nodded. "I don't think there would ever be an easy time in a place as large and busy as this," he acknowledged. "However, we need to see all the activity logs from the past few days, so we can figure out who had access to what. And we'll also need real-time access to your servers."

Richard hesitated. "I don't know if I can do that. I mean, our clients trust us with their data. We can't just hand this over to anyone."

"We're not going to use the data or even take it off-site," Connor reassured him. "All we need is to see it, so we can work out whether anyone in this building might have been tracking cellphones. You'd surely also want to know if any of your staff were doing that?"

"Absolutely, absolutely," he agreed.
